Dream House Checklist: Outdoor Showers

Now that the heat has settled in for our part of the world, anything cool is top of mind. With all the time we spend in the pool, I think about what would make things easier when I’m cleaning up. At the top of my list: an outdoor shower. When I first began going to the Round Top Antiques Fair, probably in the mid 1990’s (!), I worked for a group of home furnishings stores that focused on furnishings for ranch and lake houses (we are in Texas, after all). I had to convince my boss that it was a good idea to even go in the first place. Having […]

Outdoor Living (Pool Edition)

As it gets steadily more steamy outside, I stick my toes in the pool every couple of days to see if the water is warm enough yet to throw the floats in & start relaxing. So far I haven’t gotten past the first couple of steps, but a couple of more 90 degree days & it won’t be long. In the meantime, I’ve been perusing pictures of pretty pools in pretty settings. I love this one that Apartment Therapy featured because it’s dark inside. Something about that makes it feel refreshing & cool, & a little sexy. And the dark blue contrasts so nicely with all the white surrounding […]

Front Door Curb Appeal

One of my favorite things to do is drive through different neighborhoods, choosing details I love from exteriors – architecture style, materials, windows, landscaping. But often the thing that I seem to zero in on most is the front door – both style and color hugely influence the overall feel. I’m partial to a front door with windows, as opposed to a solid front door, as well as one surrounded by a decent-sized front porch.  Maybe it just feels more welcoming. And sconces. Every front door needs sconces.       This Hamptons Showhouse definitely has a coastal feel, but the doors translate beautifully to other style of architecture. […]

House Feature on ReStyle Source!

If you haven’t checked out the website www.restylesource.com, you need to go. Right now. I would explain who they are, but they say it best themselves: “We are the National Guide to loving LOCAL. Our goal is to reconnect shoppers with the real people and businesses that built America. In a day and age where everything can be found with a click of a mouse, we hope to redirect online shoppers to get back to the “real” experience found in shopping and doing business with local businesses. Let Freedom Ring

I am a flag freak.  I have a collection of all kinds of vintage flags, framed flags, flag bunting, all manner of flagness.  American history was always a favorite subject in our family growing up – all of our Griswold style vacations seemed to have destinations like national parks or battlefields or monuments or cities steeped in history. Flags have always been part of my decor, too.  I almost always have a flag flying outside, & I love to incorporate anything flag indoors, too.     I’ve been so moved noticing around town the past week that people have started putting out flags & banners on their houses & in […]

Looking for Pretty New Homes

Looking for Pretty New Homes

I’m often asked in the store what we call our “style.”  My answer always seems to be a lot of what we are not: modern, traditional, country, & not a mix of all those.  But maybe we’re transitional.  How’s that for a little bit of everything? Over the weekend I was perusing the MLS listings, which, truth be told, I do more often than makes any sense, hoping for some inspiration & frankly, encouragement.  There is so much new construction going on these days in Dallas, & a lot of it is just not interesting, honestly. But praise be, I found some sweetness in a favorite hot neighborhood – Devonshire. […]

Painting Inside Bookcases

Painting Inside Bookcases

An easy easy way to add sophistication & visual impact to a room is to paint the back of built-in bookcases a contrast color.  I love this look. I love the symmetry in this room.  The rosy/salmon color inside the built-in bookcases makes a pretty contrast to almost all grey room.  Here, white or cream would have been lost, so this pop color was a great choice. This dark contrast is more subtle because the built-ins are not that large, but I like that you see more behind the television.  It looks like in that area, at least, the back is paneling.  Love that.  And look how pretty the wood […]

Design Trend – metallic finishes

One of my favorite design trends in the last couple of years has been the use of metallic finishes in furniture & finish-out.  A lot of it, I think, is influenced by Kelly Wearstler.  Who wouldn’t like to have some of whatever is in her magic sauce??  She’s practically ruling the world.   She is uber talented, & I wish I lived such a glam lifestyle, but not so far.  Look at that island!  Whoa. When I began trying to mix metallic tables into what we offered at the store, I quickly became frustrated.  I could find really high end (i.e., expensive) tables that were really more modern in design […]

Concealed Refrigerators

To go hand in hand with my kitchen fixation, I love concealed refrigerators.  Well, unless a great looking subzero that  you would NEVER want to cover is an option!   Wow, what a presentation THIS is!  I’m assuming this is all refrigerator/freezer.  Gorgeous!!   This is simply a beautiful kitchen.  The great pulls on the fridge are used throughout.  And notice how pretty the glass all around the top cabinets is.  I love the simplicity & color of the grey subway tile behind that gorgeous hood.   Swooning!  I love the dark grey color on the cabinets with the gold hardware, which is such a hot thing in design right […]

Outdoor Living (No Pool Edition)

Outdoor Living (No Pool Edition)

The dream space I am planning to work on after I finish my dream kitchen is my outdoor space.  Much of that is dictated on the style of the house & the size & layout of the grounds, but it’s so fun to look at pictures & envision yourself enjoying countless hours in your private oasis.  Or, if you live here, the hours spent out there might not be countless, but you would enjoy looking OUT at it a lot.     How gorgeous is this?  I love the curve shape of the rock retaining wall, & the slope of the lawn.  There might be a pool out here somewhere, […]
