Fireplaces

Fireplaces

The only description I can think of that accurately portrays our weather lately is schizo.  Seriously.  We get a couple of days of warm-ish temps, although more cloudy lately than sunny, then some kooky front comes roaring in & it’s 40 degrees colder in a 20 minute span.     There is nothing I love more in cold weather than a great fire in the fireplace.  I don’t care if wood burning is trouble or messy or impractical.  A gas fire is just NOT the same.  My dream is to have wood stacks built in – they look so warm & inviting, not to mention the fact that you don’t […]

Friday Dreaming

Friday Dreaming

Since House is a retail store, sometimes weekends are really weekends, you know?  But still, Saturdays usually have a more relaxed vibe.  We typically have a lot of couples & pretty steady customer interaction, so when it’s anyone’s Saturday to work (we trade off so everyone gets some weekends to themselves!) it’s usually enjoyable. But I still wish I was having a little weekend (or more) getaway! Like at the Solage Calistoga resort, one of the Auberge properties in Napa Valley.  Love. As much cold weather as we’ve had in Dallas this winter – a lot, it seems! – I would love to be skiing in Telluride, too. If I […]

Villa Sevillano

Villa Sevillano

I saw a snippet of this house – villa – on Cococozy, & I was intrigued so I wanted to see more. It’s in Santa Barbara, one of my favorite places.  And it’s on the market for either $19.5 million or $21.5 million – I found reports of both.  It sits on 22 acres, & adjoins the grounds of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. At over 10,000 square feet, it boasts 6 bedrooms, 9.5 baths, ocean views, equestrian facilities, exercise fields, olive & citrus orchards, formal gardens, & inifinity edge pool with spa. Wow!  Gorgeous ocean view!  And those must be the “exercise fields.”  The equestrian facilities include […]

My Sorority Re-do Project

My Sorority Re-do Project

I loved my time at the University of Oklahoma.  A big part of that was being involved in the Alpha Chi chapter there. The house has undergone not only an exterior renovation since I was there, but an interior one as well.  In my defense, that’s not so much a statement about how long ago I was there as much as it as about how old it was when I was there! I’m sure I have a picture of the old exterior somewhere, but just to give you an idea, it was nicknamed “The Ski Lodge,” because it was a 50’s looking blond flat stone with a flat roof.  Not […]

Snowy Day

Snowy Day

The rarest of rare days here – actual snow.  Not ice.  Not ‘wintry mix.’  Real, packable snow.  Meteorologists were calling for a ‘dusting,’ but almost everywhere got an inch or even more – with no concession of a missed call on their parts.  The good news is it’s melting, so fingers crossed it won’t be icy tomorrow.  But it does make me think of winter thoughts.  And then some. If it’s going to snow, wouldn’t it be lovely to be in Paris?? Or if it’s going to be 19 degrees plus snowy, we ought to at least be skiing, right? (Telluride, my favorite.) I’ve never been to New York City […]

Why I’ll Never Be A Famous Designer

Why I’ll Never Be A Famous Designer

I love helping our customers.  I love design projects, working with clients to help create spaces that they love & reflect their lifestyles & honestly, make them happy to come home, every time. Pretentious, impractical spaces aggravate me, like this kitchen from Gwyneth Paltrow’s & Chris Martin’s LA house.  I am not a hater.  Coldplay is one of my favorite bands, & I read every issue of GOOP.  But this . . . no.  I don’t even know where to start with the wrong., but really, it’s just kind of goofy.  And their designer for this house is the uber-famous Windsor Smith. I just don’t think we have to love […]

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

If you are new here, you might not know I’m kitchen obsessed.  I dream of my dream kitchen, where I cook meals that everyone raves about, & I waft around from appliance to appliance, cabinet to pantry with an never-ending smile on my face. One reason I will be so happy in my kitchen is because it will have painted cabinets.  No stained wood for me, thank you very much. Now I’m not opposed to mixing it up a little – I love the blue on the island, & the beams on the ceiling mixed with the trim on the hood is gorgeous here! I always think I love white […]

Wired

Wired

My friend Lauren came by the store not long ago.  We used to be neighbors, as well as competitors of sort.   My little neighborhood is sandwiched in between one of the highest income per capita areas in the country, which is it’s own township, & an upscale, pretty part of Dallas called Turtle Creek.  My little hamlet is quiet, with towering trees & a small community feel.  Lauren & her brother grew up in the same house that her mother did, then when each of them married, bought a house in the neighborhood, too. Together, Lauren & her husband owned retail furniture stores, so we were kindred spirits in […]
