Painting Inside Bookcases

Painting Inside Bookcases

An easy easy way to add sophistication & visual impact to a room is to paint the back of built-in bookcases a contrast color.  I love this look. I love the symmetry in this room.  The rosy/salmon color inside the built-in bookcases makes a pretty contrast to almost all grey room.  Here, white or cream would have been lost, so this pop color was a great choice. This dark contrast is more subtle because the built-ins are not that large, but I like that you see more behind the television.  It looks like in that area, at least, the back is paneling.  Love that.  And look how pretty the wood […]

Design Trend – metallic finishes

One of my favorite design trends in the last couple of years has been the use of metallic finishes in furniture & finish-out.  A lot of it, I think, is influenced by Kelly Wearstler.  Who wouldn’t like to have some of whatever is in her magic sauce??  She’s practically ruling the world.   She is uber talented, & I wish I lived such a glam lifestyle, but not so far.  Look at that island!  Whoa. When I began trying to mix metallic tables into what we offered at the store, I quickly became frustrated.  I could find really high end (i.e., expensive) tables that were really more modern in design […]

Concealed Refrigerators

To go hand in hand with my kitchen fixation, I love concealed refrigerators.  Well, unless a great looking subzero that  you would NEVER want to cover is an option!   Wow, what a presentation THIS is!  I’m assuming this is all refrigerator/freezer.  Gorgeous!!   This is simply a beautiful kitchen.  The great pulls on the fridge are used throughout.  And notice how pretty the glass all around the top cabinets is.  I love the simplicity & color of the grey subway tile behind that gorgeous hood.   Swooning!  I love the dark grey color on the cabinets with the gold hardware, which is such a hot thing in design right […]

Outdoor Living (No Pool Edition)

Outdoor Living (No Pool Edition)

The dream space I am planning to work on after I finish my dream kitchen is my outdoor space.  Much of that is dictated on the style of the house & the size & layout of the grounds, but it’s so fun to look at pictures & envision yourself enjoying countless hours in your private oasis.  Or, if you live here, the hours spent out there might not be countless, but you would enjoy looking OUT at it a lot.     How gorgeous is this?  I love the curve shape of the rock retaining wall, & the slope of the lawn.  There might be a pool out here somewhere, […]

Sectional Sofas

Sectional Sofas

We are big fans of Lee Industries here; we love their products for the high quality & great style.  They offer such a variety of styles & fabrics that we do a lot of special orders for clients.     One thing we get questions about & price out often for customers is sectional sofas.  Yet we don’t sell many.     I love this style of sectional, from Sheryl Crowe’s house featured in Architectural Digest.  Pretty clean lines, & the tufting adds a touch of formality.  Great for entertaining, but maybe not so great for tv watching, with the high arms.  We hear that objection A LOT from men. Fireplaces

Fireplaces

The only description I can think of that accurately portrays our weather lately is schizo.  Seriously.  We get a couple of days of warm-ish temps, although more cloudy lately than sunny, then some kooky front comes roaring in & it’s 40 degrees colder in a 20 minute span.     There is nothing I love more in cold weather than a great fire in the fireplace.  I don’t care if wood burning is trouble or messy or impractical.  A gas fire is just NOT the same.  My dream is to have wood stacks built in – they look so warm & inviting, not to mention the fact that you don’t […]

Friday Dreaming

Friday Dreaming

Since House is a retail store, sometimes weekends are really weekends, you know?  But still, Saturdays usually have a more relaxed vibe.  We typically have a lot of couples & pretty steady customer interaction, so when it’s anyone’s Saturday to work (we trade off so everyone gets some weekends to themselves!) it’s usually enjoyable. But I still wish I was having a little weekend (or more) getaway! Like at the Solage Calistoga resort, one of the Auberge properties in Napa Valley.  Love. As much cold weather as we’ve had in Dallas this winter – a lot, it seems! – I would love to be skiing in Telluride, too. If I […]

Villa Sevillano

Villa Sevillano

I saw a snippet of this house – villa – on Cococozy, & I was intrigued so I wanted to see more. It’s in Santa Barbara, one of my favorite places.  And it’s on the market for either $19.5 million or $21.5 million – I found reports of both.  It sits on 22 acres, & adjoins the grounds of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. At over 10,000 square feet, it boasts 6 bedrooms, 9.5 baths, ocean views, equestrian facilities, exercise fields, olive & citrus orchards, formal gardens, & inifinity edge pool with spa. Wow!  Gorgeous ocean view!  And those must be the “exercise fields.”  The equestrian facilities include […]

My Sorority Re-do Project

My Sorority Re-do Project

I loved my time at the University of Oklahoma.  A big part of that was being involved in the Alpha Chi chapter there. The house has undergone not only an exterior renovation since I was there, but an interior one as well.  In my defense, that’s not so much a statement about how long ago I was there as much as it as about how old it was when I was there! I’m sure I have a picture of the old exterior somewhere, but just to give you an idea, it was nicknamed “The Ski Lodge,” because it was a 50’s looking blond flat stone with a flat roof.  Not […]
