I am an unashamed flagophile. Is that a word? OK, flag lover. In any form – flying them, hanging them, framing them, folding them, decorating with them. I don’t have my collection out like I used to, but whenever I pull any part of it out – Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Election Day, (what did I forget?), any day at all – I am so happy. But I have to admit it’s tough to use that color scheme in decorating – in a way that isn’t kitchy.
But when I saw this House Beautiful pic of Kelly McDowell’s Ojai, California, farmhouse, I got inspired. First, I’m kind of obsessed with Ojai. And next, look at those antique French Bulldogs!!! I WANT them! But the red leather armless wing chairs are really gorgeous & classic. I love them juxtaposed with the black trim on the French doors & windows – it adds depth & a little sophistication to the patriotic decor. And really, all she has to do is switch out the pillows on the sofa & she has an entirely different feel.
I love the red amaryllis displayed in & with the blue & white ginger jars. It’s timeless style, & so easy to do with seasonal style. Beautiful.
This space is a pretty blue & white mix with just a few red accents, so it gets an A for elegant red, white, & blue. I’m really intrigued by the cabinet behind that seems to have a little greenish tint to the color (or is it just the lighting) with the blue fabric or paper in the back. It adds nice interest as well as scale, & mixes perfectly in the space. Such a fresh feel.
In this gorgeous LA living room, the little bit of red is just the perfect amount of cheek. It doesn’t totally NEED it, but it’s fun with the red dress in the photo. Great mix of pattern, & I love the rug, too.
I love the fabric on this chair – such a classic design, & the rug is gorgeous. This could mix so easily in a traditional or more transitional design.
I love the detail of the blue walls with molding over the white wainscoting. It softens the blue without being distracting. And the amount of red is kind of perfect, too.
This New York apartment is definitely making a red, white, & blue statement. It might be a little on the bold side for me, but certainly it is beautifully done. The side chairs are an interesting mix, I think. Maybe they work with something else in the room we can’t see?
If you just can’t make the red work, this blue & white has a great fresh, young feel. I love the bench with the bamboo base & blue spotty fabric. And how can you go wrong with a Fiddle Leaf Fig in the mix? Maybe just switch out the hydrangeas for a red floral mix for a patriotic touch?
Happy 4th everyone!
