A couple of years ago on a trip to Napa Valley, a friend & I stayed at the Kenwood Inn & Spa. I’ve been to Napa a few times, but I wanted to stay somewhere a little off the radar that beckoned staying in as much as getting out. The Kenwood Inn did not disappoint. I’ll save it for a future post!
While we were there, we wanted to see another place we’d read about, Calistoga Ranch. It’s been a dream of mine to stay at an Auberge Resort, but my travel budget & my dreams have yet to intersect. Calistoga Ranch is one of the Auberge’s group’s more innovative resort concepts. We were blown away by the creativity & beauty.
Before you even get to the property, you know you are in for something special!
Each of the lodges is freestanding, from one bedrooms to the 2400 square foot Estate Lodge, geared for families or groups. The gracious concierge who gave us a tour explained that each lodge is actually mobile, built on wheels.
You would never know it, but the grounds had been used as a trailer park for many years. Because it’s so difficult to obtain approval for new commercial projects in Napa Valley, the developers kept the existing RV status and in a genius strike of creativity, had each building completely assembled off-site then brought them in – on wheels. To conform to the state’s vehicle codes, each one has axles and a VIN. Isn’t that great?
For the most part, they left nature undisturbed. The settings are serene, incorporating the idea of indoor-outdoor living, with natural materials used in much of the furniture as well.
Very nicely decorated, don’t you think? Pretty but simple, incorporating elements that fit in with the aesthetic of the resort.
We have such a small window in Texas where the weather allows us to enjoy being outside, that the idea of enjoying it so much in an indoor setting is hugely appealing to me.
And the Spa. Because Calistoga has long been known as an historic spa town, there is no room to be average. This spa is anything but. Private treatment rooms offer outdoor garden showers and soaking tubs. The also offer an assortment of Wellness classes – yoga, pilates, tai chi, and guided hikes. I’m relaxed just thinking about it all.
I’m not sure I would ever make to any of those classes – I wouldn’t be able to drag myself away from the pool!
The Lakehouse is the private restaurant, overlooking Lake Lommel.
As you might imagine, it is a sought-after wedding destination. What a gorgeous spot for a wedding ceremony!
Calistoga Ranch has moved back up to the top of my destination list! Is it your kind of vacation?
